As we move through spring, we will prepare our soil and garden spaces for the unique conditions of Florida's summer, choosing plants that thrive abundantly in our hot rainy season. This 6-part series will provide guidance, experiential learning, and take-home resources for you, our 'growing' farm and gardening community. Each week will be a standalone class, while the full series will be a joyful and deeply immersive journey to prepare participants for awesome summer gardening!
Do you buy seeds grown across the country and wonder why your plants won't grow in the Florida summer?
In our fifth workshop of the series, participants will learn the vital importance of locally-grown seeds, how to save precious seeds from your own garden, and how to propagate nearly any plant from cuttings.
Seeds contain vitally important information relevant to the climate and microbiome their parent plant grew in. Just as eating local honey supports the immune system in adapting to local pollen, local seeds grow plants that are well-adapted to the local environment. Participants will learn about the seed–plant–flower–seed life cycle, how and when to harvest seeds effectively, seed storage, and more.
We will also practice plant propagation, and simple, practical ways to clone and share healthy plants abundantly.
Guests are encouraged to bring seeds gathered from their garden for a seed-swap.
